The floods in Moravia in 1997 - one of the most devastating disasters in modern Czech history. The floods, which began about July 5, also hit Silesia and part of eastern Bohemia. After a few days in the Morava and Odra fell about as much water as usual average for the entire year.
The intense rainfall were dreadful: on Czech territory, killing forty-nine people, water is completely destroyed 2,151 homes, hundreds of buildings more or less damaged, broke twenty-six bridges. In many places was halted rail transport. Symbol of destruction became a municipality Troubky Prerov, which lies at the confluence of the Morava and Bevy. The tidal wave there has killed nine people and destroyed one hundred and fifty houses.
Oder rushing water destroyed in neighboring Poland. Damages were estimated at 3.5 billion euros, about life there came fifty people. Disaster revealed serious shortcomings in technical security measures and the organization of assistance. The floods were the reason for the modernization of obsolete flood of orders.
