Matthias II. (24. 2. 1557 - 20. 3. 1619) - Roman and German Emperor, King of Czech, Hungarian and Croatian. He came from the Habsburg dynasty, his older brother Rudolf II.
An ambitious Matthias II. Habsburg grievous, that the government of his father bequeathed older brother Rudolf II. In the years 1578 - 1581 he worked, despite Rudolph displeasure, as governor general in the Netherlands, but his ambitions were aimed much higher. A few years later, he became governor of Austria. In this period he was strongly influenced radical Viennese Bishop Melchior Khlesl, who in 1599 became chancellor and chief adviser Matyovm. At a family meeting in Vienna in 1606, Matthias had recognized as the head of the family and gradually started to strengthen his power at the expense of the already sick of Rudolf II. Matthias paradoxically helped to even explosive situation in Hungary, where the Emperor appointed as governor to negotiate peace with the Turks and rebel Hungarian states.
