Amerigo Vespucci (9. 3. 1451 or 1454 - 22. 2. 1512) - Italian explorer, discoverer. The man after whom was named America continent.
Amerigo came from a respected family of Florentine notary. He received a comprehensive education, confessed in mathematics, astronomy, geometry, literature, knew Latin. From 1491 he worked for Juanota Beraldiho of the powerful Florentine family of Medici di in Seville, whose company dealt vystrojovnm ships. After Beraldiho death and dissolution of the company Vespucci remained in Spain and in 1497 took part in his first voyage to the New World. On another voyage went in 1499 and this time headed south: landed in Brazil, explored the mouth of the Amazon and the islands of the Gulf of Mexico. After another expedition to South America Vespucci realized that this is not a big island, as it was then thought to but a new continent. He wrote a letter Mundus Novus (New Land), which was later distributed as a flyer and sailors who became famous throughout Europe. The last voyage across the ocean, he graduated in 1503. The rest of his life he worked as chief pilot Castilian.
